This garden was designed by Charlie Renico of Green Garden Landscape Design. The homeowners removed both front and back lawns and replaced them with flagstone patios surrounded by beds and pots of California Native and California friendly drought resistant plants as well as cactus and succulents. In front, they added a half wall to create a front courtyard. In all, they created 3 additional seating zones in addition to the back patio. See a video about the homes green improvements here.
There are sprinklers on timers – turned off most of the winter and into Spring, up to twice a week in the height of summer. The pots are hand-watered using water captured in rain barrels much of the year. These changes have reduced the water usage by at least 50% from when they had turf lawns. The water usage on the last bill was down to 8 HCF's.
The homeowners have made many green changes to their home that they are eager to share info on. These include solar panels, a tankless water heater, solar tubes, a whole house fan, faucet aerators and dual flush toilets. This year they have also added a whole house water filtration system and will be happy to refill reusable water bottles!
